Created On 03/27/19 13:34 PM - Last Modified 11/12/20 22:26 PM

Symptom

  • Firewall running on active-passive HA
  • Aggregate Ethernet Interface is configured with LACP enabled.
  • AE interface is up on the the Active Firewall. However, it is down on the Passive Firewall
  • Passive Link State (Under Device> High Availability> General > Active/Passive Settings) is enabled on both firewalls and members of the AE Interface are up on the Passive Firewall.

Environment

  • Firewall running in Active-Passive HA
  • PA-500
  • PA-3000 Series
  • PA-4000 Series
  • PA-5000 Series
  • PA-5200 Series

Cause

Firewall in the passive state will not participate in LACP negotiation (does not LACP pre-negotiation) unless "Enable in HA Passive State" is selected.

Resolution

  • Select "Enable in HA Passive State" under the High Availability Options on the LACP tab of the AE Interface.
  • Doing this will enable LACP pre-negotiation for the passive firewall.
  • LACP pre-negotiation enables quicker failover to the passive firewall.

Additional Information

NOTE: LACP Pre-negotiation is not supported on VM-Series firewalls along with PA-200, PA-220, and PA-800 series till PAN-OS 8.1. Starting PAN-OS 9.0, LACP Pre-negotiation is supported on all platforms except VM Series.
