Objective

To detect if there is a fan or fan tray failure on a Firewall or Panorama appliance and if an RMA Request should be opened with Support.

Environment

  • Firewall
  • Panorama Appliance

Procedure

    1. Find the output of the show system environmentals command to get a summary of the alarm status on the device for various components. Look for the output which has the 'Alarm' category set to 'True' to detect failures:
    > show system environmentals
    ----Fans----
Slot     Description        Alarm     RPMs     Min RPM
    S1       Fan #1 RPM         False     14160    2500
    S1       Fan #2 RPM         False     14210    2500
    S1       Fan #3 RPM         False     14310    2500
    S1       Fan #4 RPM         True      0        2500
    1. Check the system logs for further indication of any failures detected by the system
    > show log system
critical general        general 0  Chassis Master Alarm: Fans
critical hw             fan-fai 0  Alarm on Fan #4 RPM

    1. Check the ehmon.log or chasd.log for alarms
    > less mp-log ehmon.log
Sensor Alarm [True ]: Fan #4 Operational = False

    > less mp-log chasd.log
    Setting fan  0 speed to 137 (96 to 255) for 0.26
    Setting fan  0 speed to 111 (96 to 255) for 0.09
    Setting fan  0 speed to 96 (96 to 255) for 0.00
    Chassis Master Alarm: Fans

    1. If a faulty fan or fan tray has been identified, then a case needs to be opened with support for RMA processing. See KB below
