Objective

Can a spare unit be used during a live disaster recovery simulation or be connected up to receive all updates?

Procedure

Yes. An On Site Spare (OSS) and Spare (SPR) device can be temporarily loaded with production licenses and a disaster recovery simulated.

  1. Transfer licenses from their production device to a spare (must be same models). Refer to this article: http://knowledgebase.paloaltonetworks.com/KCSArticleDetail?id=kA10g000000ClNMCA0
  2. The production device will have temporary licenses for 30 days from the transfer date, and the Spare or OSS will take on the attributes of the production unit.
  3. Within 30 days (or 60 days for PA-200 model) the expectation is that the license transfer is reversed, open an Admin Support case to reverse the license transfer. You cannot reverse the license transfer yourself.

Additional Information

A spare (OSS or SPR) is coded so licenses can only be transferred to it from another device. Licenses, including trial licenses, cannot be activated on a spare.
An OSS device can only be used to temporarily replace a Production device. SKU (device part code) swap between Production and OSS devices is not supported by system design.
Refer to the EULA . Using an OSS device as a Production permanently exhausts the concept of using the OSS "beyond the scope of the use right and/or capacity purchased" stipulated in the EULA.
