How to fix GlobalProtect Virtual Adapter doesn't show up and "Pan GlobalProtect Driver installation failed with error = 4" message appears.

Symptom


How to fix GP Virtual Adapter doesn't show up.

"Pan GlobalProtect Driver installation failed with error = 4" message appears in PanGPS.log file.



Environment


GlobalProtect with Windows device.
Prisma Access - Mobile Users with Windows device.


Resolution


Step1) Follow Knowledge below and validate if the issue would be resolved.

 

Step2) Collect GlobalProtect Client log and extract it. Then check debug_drv.log file.
If the following message is recorded in the file, go to next step.  Note that Error code is variable.

MM/DD/YY hh:mm:ss:xxx[Debug 439]: Driver install component fails with error 0xXXXXXXXX!

 

Step3) Check if Windows image is corrupted or not.
Execute the following commands in Windows Power Shell with admin privilege. 

C:\WINDOWS\system32>chcp 437
C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanHealth

 

Step4) If the Windows image is fine, need to make Windows Registry clean.
Use Windows registry cleaner like CCleaner to clean up registry.
Note : Palo Alto Networks doesn't have recommended applications to accomplish this task, any applications are fine.


Step5) If the customer cannot accept the risk to use Windows registry cleaner, re-installing Operating System itself can fix the issue.
