Symptom


Line card issue can cause the firewall to :
  • Unexpected reboot in an attempt to recover
  • Go to Non-functional state
  • Reboot into maintenance mode
One or two of the line cards will show up as failing in the CLI when you view the chassis status as follows 
> show chassis status

Environment


  • Palo Alto 7000 series Firewall with Line cards installed.
  • Supported PAN-OS.

Cause


Line card failure can be caused by:
  • Internal packet path monitoring failures on the specific slot
  • Faulty line card
When line card failure causes path monitoring failure, a system log may be generated as follows. 
high     general        general 0  slot2: exiting because of path monitor failure
high     general        general 0  slot2-path_monitor: exiting because service missed too many heartbeats
critical general        general 0  Internal packet path monitoring failure, restarting slot 2

 

Resolution


  1. Open a ticket with the support team for further investigation.
  2. Collect the outputs of the commands below: 
> show chassis power
> show chassis inventory
> show chassis status slot <slot number>
> show chassis status
  1. Generate a tech support file and upload to the case
