How to perform a factory reset on a PA-5000 series firewall

Objective


  • Login failed after factory reset pf PA-5060 using upgraded PAN-OS 8.1.24
  • The article provides information on performing factory Reset of PA-5060 on PAN-OS, 8.0.0 which was the original PAN-OS version when the device was shipped.


Environment


  • PA-5060 Firewalls
  • PANOS-8.1.24 and 8.0.0
  • Factory Reset.


Procedure


  1. Connect a console cable from a computer to the console port on the PA-5000 series device.
  2. Use a terminal program (e.g. Putty) to connect to the device.
  3. Power on the PA-5000 series device to boot it and watch for the following during the boot up:
Autoboot to default partition in 5 seconds.
Enter 'maint' to boot to maint partition.
  1. Quickly type maint and hit Enter.
  2. Select PANOS (maint, sda) and hit the Enter key: 
PANOS (maint-other, sda)
PANOS (maint-other, sdb) 
PANOS (maint, sda) 
PANOS (maint, sdb) 
PANOS (sysroot0, sda) 
PANOS (sysroot0, sdb)
  1. On the next screen, Welcome to the Maintenance Recovery Tool, press Enter when you see < Continue
  2. Arrow down to Factory Reset and press Enter to display the menu
  3. You will see the Image that will be used to perform the factory reset. 
  4. Select the original PAN-OS version installed on the firewall when it was shipped.
  5. Select Factory Reset and press Enter again
  6. Type the ESC key when the Factory Reset completes
  7. Arrow down to Reboot and hit the Enter key.  There will be a one-two minute pause and the unit will then reboot. 
  8. It will take several minutes for the autocommit to complete and allow the admin/admin login to work properly.
