System Boot Failure with Error 15: File Not Found

Symptom


  • The Palo Alto Networks device encounters a boot error with the following:
INIT: version 2.86 booting

                Welcome to PanOS
INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal
Stopping PAN Software: [  OK  ]
Shutting down NFS mountd: [  OK  ]
Shutting down NFS daemon: nfsd: last server has exited, flushing export cache
[  OK  ]
  Booting 'PANOS (sysroot0, sda)'

root (hd0,1)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0xfd
kernel /boot/vmlinuz ro root=/dev/md2 console=ttyS0,9600n8 quiet

Error 15: File not found
  Booting 'PANOS (sysroot0, sdb)'

Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0xfd

Environment


  • Palo Alto Firewall


Cause


This specific problem may be caused when a user sets the RAID master as one drive, interrupts the process, and then setting the other drive as the master.
The result is that both partitions have their kernel file pointers (vmlinuz) renamed by appending “.saved”.
During the boot process, the system looks for the pointer named “vmlinuz”.
In this case, the pointer does not exist and thus, the system fails to boot with "Error 15".


Resolution


To resolve this issue

  1. Enter Maintenance Mode
  2. Perform a Factory Reset.
