During an upgrade from GlobalProtect Agent 1.2 to GlobalProtect Agent 2.0.3 on a HP ENVY Spectre XT Ultrabook PC,  GlobalProtect Agent failed to install properly.

The setup included:

  • OS: Windows 7 Pro SP1
  • Model: HP ENVY Spectre XT Ultrabook PC
  • System type: 64-bit OS

The Palo Alto Networks GlobalProtect service log shows the following:

06/30/14 18:09:06:420 Error(356): OpenService failed (1060)

This error is caused by a Windows limitation. The path of the PC, which contains duplicated entries for SQLs and caused msiexec failure, is too long. Notepad could not be ran from command console, which is another Windows limitation.

The msiexec.exe requires a Windows path to include c:\windows\system32.

Follow these steps:

  1. Change the windows path to the default path:
  2. Logoff or reboot. Rebooting is preferred because it ensures the path was changed.
  3. To verify the path changed, open the command prompt and type in "path"
  4. Uninstall GlobalProtect
  5. Delete the GlobalProtect installation folder
  6. Delete registry key
  7. Install new version of GlobalProtect
  8. Connect
