PAN-OS Images gets removed after uploading a second image

Symptom

  • Manual upload of software images does not trigger the same behavior as when downloaded from the update server.

Environment

  • Panorama software
  • Device deployment software
  •  PAN-OS 8.1, 9.0, 9.1

Cause

The cause is that the software image meta-data is not loaded which causes two major issues:

  • It forces customers to install a base image before they can install the desired maintenance release during a major version upgrade. This doubles the upgrade time since they are required to install two images instead of one.
  • The software is not available for installation based on the version in the CLI and does not appear in the Device > Software, Panorama > Software, or Device Deployment > Software tables after uploading from the file
  • Until PAN-OS version 10.0, we can only upload one manual image to the firewall.

Resolution

Install the uploaded PAN-OS image before installing the new one.

Additional Information

> show max-num-images will show the maximum number of deployment images the firewall can store but it doesn't apply to manual uploads of Panos images.
