Error message "operator is invalid. it is a system username" displayed when adding admin account with username as "operator"

Symptom


  • Firewall is upgraded to PAN-OS 10.2.x.
  • a new administrator with username "operator" is added.
  • When trying to click on OK, error message "operator is invalid. it is a system username" is displayed.
  • The issue is only seen from PAN-OS 10.2, and it is not observed in 10.1.


Environment


  • Palo Alto Firewalls or Panorama
  • PAN-OS 10.2.x and above.
  • Administrator account


Cause


"operator" named account has been added by default from 10.2.x onwards.

Resolution


  1. Do not use the name "operator" when creating a username.
  2. User variations such as "operator1" or similar.
