Objective
This article objective is to provide multiple ways to check if the Metadata Regeneration task is completed.
Environment
- M Series Panorama
- PAN-OS 10.1 or higher
- Replacement of faulty unit
- Metadata Regeneration
Procedure
- CLI command "request metadata-regenerate" command output provides the information. Note that the SSH session must be kept alive to get the information.
admin@Panorama> request metadata-regenerate slot 1
Bringing down vld: vld-0-0
Process 'vld-0-0' executing STOP
Removing old metadata from /opt/pancfg/mgmt/vld/vld-0
Process 'vld-0-0' executing START
Done generating metadata for LD:1
The log "Done generation metadata" indicates the metadata regeneration task is complete.
- Monitoring the log file in vld-x-0.log using the cli command "tail follow yes mp-log vld-x-0.log"
- The metadata generation task output is written in the vld-x-0.log file.
- Note : the vld identifier is equal to the slot number -1. For slot 1, the log file to monitor is vld-0-0.log (1-1 =0)
admin@Panorama> tail follow yes mp-log vld-0-0.log

The log "Done generating metadata" indicates the metadata regeneration task is complete.
- Monitor the vld-x-0 process PID using the CLI command "show system software process | match vld-x-0"
- Once the metadata regeneration is complete, the process vld-x-0 is restarted. So the PID of the process will change.
- Note : the vld identifier is equal to the slot number -1. For slot 1, the log file to monitor is vld-0-0.log (1-1 =0)
admin@Panorama> show system software process | match vld-0-0
Process vld-0-0 running (pid: 10415)
* Once regeneration complete *
admin@Panorama> show system software process | match vld-0-0
Process vld-0-0 running (pid: 54232)
- Monitor the regeneration task using the CLI command "show system resources | match rege". The task will disappear once completed.
admin@Panorama> show system resources | match rege
57021 20 0 39400 6032 4628 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 regenerat+
* Once regeneration complete *
admin@Panorama> show system resources | match rege
admin@Panorama>
Additional Information
The metadata regeneration task duration depends on the disk size.
As indicative value, the regeneration for a 2TB disk took more than 12h to complete.
