Symptom

Trying to setup a TAP interface on a firewall with PCI Passthrough to the Physical interface on the VMWare switch but the port will not power on, on the VMWare ESXI server.

Environment

A VM Firewall with TAP interfaces with PCI Passthrough with TAP on the physical VMWare Switch on VMWare ESXI using I350 NIC's

Cause

The reason that physical switch port will not power on with PCI Passthrough enabled, is due to the fact that this is not supported on a VMWare ESXI host with a I350 NIC.

Resolution

Using ESXI x550 NIC's on the VMWare host or using a VMWare server with the x550 NIC's will resolve the issue and allow the port to power on with PCI Passthrough.
