System log displays "Master Alarm: Temperature" on a PA 5200 series firewall

Symptom


  • System log (show log system) reports critical alerts as below
critical general general 0 Chassis Master Alarm: Cleared
critical general general 0 Chassis Master Alarm: Temperature
  • ehmon.logs (less mp-log ehmon.log) display DP temperature being high
+0700 Sensor Alarm [True ]: DP0 Core = 85.200
+0700 Sensor Alarm [True ]: DP0 Core = 85.200


Environment


  • Palo Alto PA-5200 series firewalls.
  • Supported PAN-OS
  • Alarms


Cause


Improper air flow due to clogged/dirty air filter.

Note: There are other reasons for high DP CPU as well. This article deals with the air filter problem.


Resolution


  1. Check physically for anything else that could obstruct the airflow.
  2. Inspect and replace the Air Intake filter. Refer 'Replace the Air Intake Filters on a PA-5200 Series Firewall'. 


Additional Information


Palo Alto Networks recommends that you replace the filter every 6 months.
