Question

Does Palo Alto VM firewall/Panorama in Azure supports Azure native backup?

Environment

  • Palo Alto VM based Firewalls
  • Azure

Answer

  1. Palo Alto VM firewall/Panorama does not support Azure Backup and Site Recovery. Azure backup for Palo Alto VM firewall/Panorama is not supported due to Linux integration services that we use in PAN-OS.
  2. The Azure backup is for specific OS and is not supported on Palo Alto VM firewall/Panorama at the moment.
  3. Do not use the Azure Backup/snapshots functionality on the VM-Series on Azure. Snapshots/Backup can impact performance and result in intermittent, inconsistent packet loss and instability on VM firewall/Panorama.
  4. If you need configuration backups, use Panorama or Export named configuration snapshot from the firewall (Device > Set up > Operations). Using the Export named configuration snapshot exports the active configuration (running-config.xml) on the firewall and allows you to save it to any network location.
