Software upgrade on PA-5450 gets stuck and eventually the Firewall reboots to 'maint' mode

Symptom


When upgrading the PA-5450 firewall it becomes unresponsive and eventually reboots to maintenance mode.
 

Environment


  • PA-5450 firewall
  • PAN-OS 10.2.6 and above.

Cause


Filesystem corruption.

Resolution


  1. The issue is targeted to be fixed under PAN-246420 in PAN-OS 10.2.11, 10.1.14, 11.0.7, and 11.1.3 PAN-OS versions.
  2. Upgrading to the above-mentioned version will resolve the issue.
Workaround:
  1. Reinstall the software again from the "maintenance" mode.
  2. The reinstallation triggers a filesystem check (FSCK), addressing and clearing any filesystem corruption issues.
