Question
Does a migration from Perpetual bundle license to Software NGFW Credits require a reboot?
Environment
PANOS-10.2.4-hx, PA-VM-500, GP-6.0.4
Answer
Perpetual bundle licenses are end-of-sale and have to be renewed for the new license model, the Software NGFW Credits .
You may need to migrate your VM(s) from perpetual bundle license model to VM-Flex license .
When you create a Deployment profile , at the PAN-OS you can choose between Flexible vCPU model (PAN-OS 10.0.4 and above) or Fixed vCPU model.
1. in Fixed vCPU model, the allocated credits will be consumed based upon the VM series model .
After you migrate your VM from perpetual bundle to a Deployment profile created for Fixed vCPU model, you can keep the same serial number and the firewall does not have to reboot.
Follow the migration steps detailed here .
2. in Flexible vCPU model, the allocated credits will be consumed based upon the used vCPUs configured on your VM. After the migration you may have to set the number of licensed vCPUs on the VM and in this case the firewall will need to reboot.
If your firewall is in a production environment, it is advisable to plan a short maintenance window for the migration.
