Symptom

• Windows machines are unable to boot up using PXE boot because the PXE server name and the boot file name are not passed to the clients
• PCAP taken on the ION LAN interface confirm that the PXE boot server and boot file information are missing in the DHCP DISCOVER message

Environment

  • Software Version: 6.3.2-b5
  • Hardware Model : ion 1200-s-c5g-ww
  • Windows PXE Server
  • ION configured as DHCP server

Cause

  • The VCI name configuration (DHCP Custom Option 60) was breaking the functioning of the DHCP Server on the ION.

Resolution

  1. Changes were made in ION software release versions 5.6.13, 6.1.2 and 6.2.1 so that VCI information in no longer required when configuring the ION as a DHCP Server.
  2. The customer issue was resolved by deleting the VCI names from the DHCP custom option configuration on the ION as marked by the arrows below.
