Symptom


Outbound Ping/ICMP does not work through Azure CNGFW even though you have allow policy on the firewall.

Environment


  • Cloud NGFW
  • Azure Platform
  • Supported PAN-OS

Cause


The ICMP protocol is not permitted through the Azure load balancer.

Resolution


  1. Ping.exe uses ICMP and is not permitted through Azure.
  2. Azure recommends to test the connectivity using port ping.
  3. One can use other tools, such as PSPing, Nmap, and telnet, to test connectivity to a specific TCP port.
