Symptom

  • When installed PAN-OS 11.1.3 on Panorama, the following error returned.
    File "/opt/panrepo/releases/11.1.3/validate", line 359, in <module>
    (min([dts['min'] for dts in log_type_intv_dir.values() if dts['min']]).strftime('%Y-%m-%d'),
    ValueError: min() arg is an empty sequence

  • And this error is also seen in /var/log/elasticsearch/__pan_cluster__.log.
    [2024-05-21T13:58:06,679][ERROR][o.e.b.ElasticsearchUncaughtExceptionHandler] [<serial number>]uncaught exception in thread [main]
    org.elasticsearch.bootstrap.StartupException: java.lang.IllegalStateException: The index [pan_20230726_all_<serial number>/vencATmGQXqJIdx0mA7F6w] was created with version [5.6.7] but the minimum compatible version is [6.0.0-beta1]. It should be re-indexed in Elasticsearch 6.x before upgrading to 7.17.14.

Environment

  • PANOS 11.1.0
  • Panorama

Cause

The elasticsearch error indicates that the indices was created version 5.6.7, and it's not compatible with PAN-OS 11.1 and is not allowing ES to form the cluster.

Resolution

Upgrade PAN-OS to 11.1.2 once, then upgrade to 11.1.3.
