Symptom

The following error is returned when attaching an SD-WAN profile to an AE subinterface:

ae x.x -> sdwan-link-settings -> sdwan-interface-profile 'xxx' is not a valid reference
ae x.x -> sdwan-link-settings -> sdwan-interface-profile is invalid

Environment

  • Any Firewall or Panorama
  • Any PAN-OS version

Cause

If the parent interface is in vsys X and the child subinterface is in vsys Y, then attaching the SD-WAN profile to the subinterface throws the above-mentioned error in the GUI. This is because the child subinterface is not referring to the same vsys as the parent interface.

Resolution

Ensure that the subinterface is in the same vsys as the parent interface.
