Analytics Mode
In the first insertion mode (or phase), the CloudGenix ION hardware appliance is deployed inline at the branch between the Layer 2 or Layer 3 switch and the existing router.

In this mode, CloudGenix simply collects rich, detailed network and application analytics data. No VPN tunnels are created and CloudGenix does not select any paths.

Most deployments first use this mode for a few days, so that CloudGenix can better understand the applications that run on the network and application performance characteristics.

The data can be used to design the application policies.

GEN1 packet-based SD-WAN solutions cannot provide this introductory step. The solutions require that you build and route traffic through their VPN tunnels to gain visibility or collect analytics.

Therefore, it is difficult to baseline the network and quantify the benefits that SD-WAN is providing.

Control

After a customer users analytics-only mode, the customer can easy switch the device to control mode.

In this mode, CloudGenix uses all of the application data and network data that it collected and begins making the data actionable for selecting a drive path.

Here, the full CloudGenix SD-WAN functionality is being delivered without requiring the replacement of the pre-existing router.

Many customers prefer to start their SD-WAN deployment in this mode, because they either own their existing routers and still have years left of depreciation on them or they have carrier-managed routers as part of their existing telecommunications contract.

An added benefit of control mode is that the CloudGenix ION device has integrated fail-to-wire cards, which enable an added level of high availability.

If either the ION or the router fails, the surviving device can take over without disrupting connectivity.

Router Replacement

CloudGenix can run in full-router-replacement mode, which eliminates the need for a router.

Existing MPLS and internet connections can be directed into the CloudGenix ION device.

CloudGenix also has a built-in application zone-based firewall, which enables consolidation of branch firewall appliances onto the ION device.
Router

High Availability

CloudGenix uses fail-to-wire interfaces to maintain 100% circuit capacity even if a device fails.

If one of the devices goes down, traffic is forwarded to the second device.

The branch site avoids a single point of failure and uses all of the WAN capacity at the site, even when the device that terminates the circuit goes down.
