Symptom

  • After SFP transceiver is plugged to an interface and the interface is up and active, show transceiver <interface-name> shows Rx Power as 0.00 mW
    > show transceiver ethernet1/14

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Port Temperature Voltage Current Tx Power Rx Power
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
     ethernet1/14 36.99 C 3.29 V 5.83 mA 0.63 mW 0.00 mW
  • The Rx Power is then updated without any action.
    > show transceiver ethernet1/14

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Port Temperature Voltage Current Tx Power Rx Power
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
     ethernet1/14 37.94 C 3.28 V 6.23 mA 0.65 mW 0.62 mW

Environment

  • Palo Alto hardware Firewalls
  • Supported PAN-OS
  • SFP transceiver module

Cause

  • The default diagnostic monitor interval is 3,600 seconds (i.e 1 hour).
  • When the interface is first plugged in or after a link down/up event, it takes an hour for the diagnostic monitor to run and display the power.

Resolution

  1. Set the diagnostic data with shorter delay (less than 3600 seconds)
  2. The diagnostic monitor interval to 10 seconds in the example below
> set transceiver-monitor-rate seconds 10
Note: This command is not persistent across reboot.
