Symptom

  • Critical Severity System log (show log system) message "Chassis Master Alarm: RAID"
  • Alarm LED shows Red on front panel of the device

Environment

  • Palo Alto Networks Firewalls (PA-5000, PA-5200, PA-5400 and PA-7000 platforms)
  • Panorama (M-200, M-600, M-500, M-300, M-700)
  • Supported PAN-OS

Cause

  • This System log message indicates one or two faulty drives in RAID1 array (Two disks are present in RAID1 array. This configuration provides redundancy so if a drive in a RAID 1 array fails there is no service interruption or loss of log data. )
  • When this System log message is seen, failure could be in any drive such as solid-state drive (SSD), hard-disk drive (HDD), Log Disk, etc.

Resolution

  1. Run the command "show system raid detail"
  2. Check if the faulty drive is seen.
  3. Once seen, generate a tech support file and open a case with Support to confirm if disk replacement is required.

Example: The output below indicates faulty SSD - disk1:

> show system raid detail

> debug system disk-smart-info disk-x

where 'x' is disk number (1 or 2).
