What-are-the-considerations-for-migrating-Palo-Alto-devices-on-Amazon-EBS-volumes-from-gp2-to-gp3?

Environment

  • All supported PANOS versions.
  • Firewalls in AWS cloud.
  • Panorama in AWS cloud.

Answer

  1. Review the guideline provided by AWS: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/storage/migrate-your-amazon-ebs-volumes-from-gp2-to-gp3-and-save-up-to-20-on-costs/
  2. The Baseline throughput GP2 can go up to 250 MB/s, while GP3 remains at 125 MB/s.  Confirm this with AWS.
  3. For the down time during the GP3 conversion: based on the test that we performed in the lab, we didn't encounter any outages on our AWS setup.  However, our recommendation is to perform this during a planned window.
  4. The disk conversion is done at hypervisor level thus contacting AWS on checking any possible impacts is highly recommended.
