Error message when trying to upgrade PAN-OS from 8.0 to 8.1

Symptom


  • Trying to Upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1
  • The following error message is displayed
Upgrading from 8.0.0 to 8.1.21 requires a content version of 769 or greater and found 695-4002.
Failed to install version 8.1.21 type panos

 

Environment


  • Palo Alto Network Firewall or Panorama
  • PAN-OS 8.0 and 8.1
  • Content Update.

Cause


Device does not have latest content versions installed

Resolution


Upgrade the Content Database to the latest version then perform the upgrade:

CLI: 
> request content upgrade download latest
> request content upgrade install version latest


WebGUI:
  1. Go to Device > Dynamic Updates
  2. Click 'Check Now'
Reference Applications and Threats section to install the latest Content Database version
