Internet Explorer Prior to Windows10 May Not Display Certain Webpages

Symptom


IE on earlier versions of Windows10 may display the following error when accessing certain websites:

Environment


  • Windows Internet Explorer.
  • Windows 10.


Cause


An analysis of the cipher suite in the SSL exchange indicates that the server may be presenting a cipher that is not supported by the particular version of windows/IE.
There are a number of third-party tools for testing a site's SSL configuration on the internet . One such example is found here. Using one of these tools to test this website, the highlighted cipher suites are displayed as follows:

Based on documentation from Microsoft these ciphers are not supported on earlier versions of Windows. This can also be confirmed from Group Policy on Windows machine.


Resolution


It is recommended to use other web clients other than Internet Explorer and/or supported versions of Windows OS.
