Question

  • Why the PA-VM is suddenly not accessible via CLI, GUI, or console?

Environment

  • Platform: PA-VM on Public/Private cloud
  • PAN-OS / Plugin Version: Any
  • Deployment: Existing

Answer

  1. In the majority of the cases, the PA-VM freezes when a snapshot or a backup is taken on the VM itself. The console may display an output that is similar to the below screenshot:

  1. This behavior is happening because the PANOS doesn't support any kind of snapshot or 3rd party backups on the VM itself. Therefore, any backup process that is running on the virtual machine must be stopped.

  1. The supported way of taking a backup of the configuration is by exporting a configuration snapshot from the CLI/GUI, as shown below:
    • CLI: By using either SCP or TFTP, as shown below:

tftp export configuration from <config_file_name> to <tftp_host>
scp export configuration from <config_file_name> to <username@host:path>

  • GUI: By navigating to Device > Setup > Operations > Configuration Management, as shown below:

Additional Information

NOTE:
To automate the backup process, Panorama provides a mechanism for scheduling the export. More details can be found here.
