Panorama cdb and mdb process not starting after downgrade from 9.1.4 to 9.0.14 with GUI unresponsive and CLI unstable

Objective


  • After downgrade any Panorama to 9.0.14 from 9.1.4, cdb and mdb process not running with Exit Code: 100
  • Discrepancies between different versions of Mongodb are the root cause for this problem
  • A new solution is available in PAN-OS 9.1.12 and onwards were it is possible to recover the system without Root access or factory reset the appliance.


Environment


  • Any Panorama Virtual or physical
  • Downgrade from 9.1 to 9.0


Procedure


  1. On the Panorama running 9.1.12 or onwards,  first select and install a PAN-OS 9.0 release on the web interface
  2. Once the installing process is finished, it will show a pop-up window requesting for reboot confirmation. Before going ahead with it, open in parallel the CLI and run next command: 
    > debug mongo clear instance mdb

     
  3. Afterwards, it is possible to resume the install process and proceed with the reboot confirmation.
