Symptom

  • The customer is using PAN-OS 8.0 and 7.1 which are EoL (End-of-Life).
  • When the recently released content update is installed into the Palo Alto Networks firewall where any of PAN-OS 8.0 and 7.1 is running, the Commit fails with the message ”Error: Threat database handler failed(Module: device) Failed to commit policy to device Failed to commit new content automatically. Please use the commit command to start using the new content.” as the below screenshot shows.

Environment

  • Palo Alto Firewalls and Panorama.
  • PAN-OS 8.0
  • PAN-OS 7.1

Cause

This is caused because PAN-OS 8.0 and 7.1 don't support the content release 8462 and later.

Resolution

If the customer would like to use the content release 8462 and later, they need to upgrade the Palo Alto Networks firewall to PAN-OS 8.1 and later.

Additional Information

The message indicates that this issue can be avoided by running the commit command in the PAN-OS administrative CLI, however it can't solve this issue.
