Question

There are scenarios that upgrading Pan-OS from CLI is required, such as Log Collector, where only CLI access is available. But, does the Pan-OS upgrade path the same between WebUI and CLI?

Environment

  • PA Firewall
  • Panorama
  • PAN-OS 8.1, 9.0, 9.1

Answer

The upgrade path is almost the same when using between WebUI and CLI, but CLI requires to install the base image before installing the later release version. Below is an example when upgrading from 7.1.24 to 8.1.13:

From WebUI:
Download base image 8.0.2
Download, install 8.0.20 and reboot
Download base image 8.1.0
Download, install 8.1.13 and reboot

From CLI:
Download and install base image 8.0.2
Download, install 8.0.20 and reboot
Download and install base image 8.1.0
Download, install 8.1.13 and reboot
