Symptom

From Panorama when attempting to push the template to the firewall,  "preview changes" displays below error message:
Bad template push candidate on disk.

Environment

  • PAN-OS 8.1 and 9.0
  • Any Palo Alto Firewall
  • Any Panorama

Cause

This error is seen when template configuration is not on the disk and it happens if local commit is not done or it has failed. This can lead to situation where the candidate config will not pass the schema validation and error is reported.

Resolution

Follow the below steps to resolve the issue:
  1. Removed the firewall from the Template-Stack
  2. Commit on the Panorama.
  3. Re-added the Firewall to the same Template-Stack.
  4. Commit on the Panorama.
  5. Then pushed the Template to the firewalls.
