Symptom

PA-VM is deployed using bootstrap process and the configuration is picked up as desired however, PA-VM boots up without license being applied.
  • Log in to the firewall CLI and execute below CLI command:
> debug logview component bts_details
s1mp bts_details 2020-01-21 10:19:59: DEBUG: panup-all-antivirus-* file not found on media
s1mp bts_details 2020-01-21 10:19:59: DEBUG: panupv2-all-contents-* file not found on media
s1mp bts_details 2020-01-21 10:19:59: DEBUG: authcodes file not found on media
s1mp bts_details 2020-01-21 10:19:59: DEBUG: decrypt.key file not found on media

or
  • Review bts_details logs to understand and verify the failure events under below path (from Techsupport File)

/opt/panrepo/logs/bts_details.log

2020-01-21 10:19:59: DEBUG: panup-all-antivirus-* file not found on media
2020-01-21 10:19:59: DEBUG: panupv2-all-contents-* file not found on media
2020-01-21 10:19:59: DEBUG: authcodes file not found on media
2020-01-21 10:19:59: DEBUG: decrypt.key file not found on media
  • Above CLI output indicates “authcodes” file is missing
  • Verify if a file titled “authcodes” exists in the licenses folder within the bootstrap package.

Environment

  • Platform: PA-VM
  • PAN-OS / Plugin Version: Any
  • Deployment: New, Bootstrapped

Cause

  • “authcodes” file is either missing within the “license” folder or the filename might be incorrect
  • File being commonly named as “authcodes.key” or “authcodes.txt” instead of “authcodes”

Resolution

  • Ensure file named “authcodes” exists in “License” folder within the bootstrap package with a valid auth code and without any typos in the filename
