What are the recommended steps in moving the guest VMs and PA-VM reside under the same ESXi host? 

Environment


  • vCenter: 6.x
  • ESXi Host: 6.x
  • NSX: 6.3.x / 6.4.x

Answer


Here are the recommended steps:
 
  1. ESXi Host has Guest VMs and SVMs (PA-VM) running
  2. Migrate (vMotion) Guest VMs to a different ESXi Host in the Cluster
  3. Leave SVM (PA-VM) powered on 
  4. Enter Maintenance Mode (Host)  which will bring down the SVM (PA-VM) gracefully
  5. When the ESXi Host is power on and exits from the maintenance state, the SVM (PA-VM) should come up automatically.
  6. The Guest VMs can be also brought back to the same ESXi Host through the vMotion
