Symptom


  • Swap Memory of Panorama M-Series appliance is full (100% utilized)
  • No memory leak.
  • System functionality and performance is not impacted, but still swap memory is full.
     Truncated output of System Resource from M-500: 
Mem: 132075232k total, 109593240k used, 22481992k free, 5321120k buffers
Swap: 7996k total, 7996k used, 0k free, 93847744k cached <<<<<<<< all swap memory used.

Environment


Panorama M-Series appliance
  • M-100
  • M-200
  • M-500
  • M-600

Cause


Panorama M-Series appliance only has 8MB in swap area.

Resolution


  • M-Series appliance is a 64bit system with 128gb of memory and high virtual memory usage is not an issue in 64-bit systems.
  • Panorama M-Series appliances only has 8MB in swap area, thus 100% usage is normal and should not be a concern.
  • It is the Kernel to decide when to put some process memory into swap area, it may be expected if this user process memory is inactive for too long.
Recommended to monitor overall system memory than monitoring swap usage for Panorama M-series devices
