Symptom

  • When trying to commit, the commit fails with the following message.
Result: Failed

Changes to policy and objects configuration
Changes to configuration in device and network
Error: application 'ms-ds-smb-base' not found

Environment

  • All PAN-OS

Cause

The issue is caused by the content-preview feature when the content is only downloaded and not installed when moving from the 3-digit content version to the 4-digit content version.

Example:
You are moving from content version 769 (3-digit) to 8008 (4-digit).
And you have only downloaded the 4-digit version, not installed.
This will populate the version as '7999-0000'
Or if you are still running an older version, and you want to move to a newer one <8026.
This would normally happen when you are replacing the device,

Resolution

  • Installing the downloaded content version will fix the commit issue.
  • or downloading the content version 8026 or later will also fix the issue.
