Cause

The issue can appear due to file system corruption on the VM during the upgrade process.

Resolution

There are two options to resolve this issue:

Option A

  1. Check if system boots up in maintenance mode
  2. Reboot the system and type 'maint' when prompted.
  3. If maintenance mode is available, then select 'Select Running Config' option and choose earlier working version
  4. Select the option 'Reboot'.

In the event of the system not booting into maintenance mode, follow the steps in Option B below.

Option B

  1. Rebuild the VM from scratch
  2. Download the Panorama base image from support.paloaltonetworks.com > Software Updates
Unzip the Panorama base image zip file, and extract the panorama-esx.ovf file.
This .ovf template file is required for installing Panorama
  3. Import the configs using the CLI commands below:
    > scp import configuration from username@host:path
    > tftp import configuration <tabbed options>
  4. Commit the changes
  5. Once the system is ready, take a snapshot of VM
  6. If necessary, upgrade to a later version
