Symptom

Once support has determined a failed HDD you can follow steps below to replace the failed drive.

Environment

  • Panorama M-100
  • PAN-OS 7.1 and above.

Resolution

To swap the RMA'd hard drives, perform the following steps:
  1. Identify the failed drive.
( Example below the output shows that disk drive A2 failed and the drive model is ST91000640NS.)
admin@M-100> show system raid detail
Disk Pair A Available
  Status clean, degraded
  Disk id A1 Present
      model : ST91000640NS
      size : 953869 MB
      status : active sync
  Disk id A2 Present
      model : ST91000640NS
      size : 953869 MB
      status : failed

  1. Remove the failed hard disk drive (HDD) pair from the RAID 1 array.
admin@M-100> request system raid remove A2 (A2 is chosen based on the example above)

  1. Remove the failed HDD and insert replacement. (Verify it is the same model is current one listed in raid detail output)
 Remove and install M-100 HDD
  1. Once installed, Add the replacement drive to the RAID 1 array.
admin@M-100> request system raid add A2
(The system automatically configures the new drive to mirror the contents of the other drive in that RAID 1 array.)

  1. Continue to view RAID status until you see that the disk pair (Disk Pair A in this example) shows Available and both drives show the status active sync. To view RAID status, run the following command: show system raid detail
(Example of RAID 1 still building )
> show system raid detail
Disk Pair A                                                            Available
Status                        clean,degraded, recovering (14% complete)
Disk id A1                                                             Present
  model                     : ST91000640NS
  size                      : 953869 MB
  status                    : active sync
Disk id A2                                                             Present
  model                     : ST91000640NS
  size                      : 953869 MB
  status                    : spare rebuilding

(Example of RAID 1 building complete )
admin@M-100> show system raid detail
Disk Pair A Available
Status clean
Disk id A1 Present
  model : ST91000640NS
  size : 953869 MB
  status : active sync
Disk id A2 Present
  model : ST91000640NS
  size : 953869 MB
  status : active sync
Note: Depending on the size of the disk, it may take 2 to 3 hours for the disks to come in RAID. Once completed, reboot the Panorama M-100, so that system initializes with a new pair of hard disks.

Additional Information

  • For information on how to recover logs after swapping RAID disks in a log collector M-100, refer to: M-100 RMA Process
  • RAID Disk pairs need to be identical make and model so they are shipped in pairs. Replacement of both Disks is suggested to avoid mismatch of disk pair causing RAID to fail. For steps on replacing both drives to match see M-100 Appliance Hardware Reference Guide
