Upgrade failing due to missing base image

Symptom

  • The device may fail to install a software update with an error displayed below
  • Although this is an example of 8.0, it can happen with any version.

ERROR: The required '8.0' base image must be loaded before this image can be loaded.  You do not have to install or run the base image, only download it.  Once the base is loaded, re-download your target image.

Environment

  • Palo Alto PA-200 Firewalls
  • PAN-OS Upgrade

Cause

  • If the base image was never downloaded in the first place then it will have to be downloaded before a higher version of that minor release can be installed.
  • If the base image was downloaded first (for example 8.0.0), and then the target maintenance release is downloaded (for example 8.0.20) then the problem is most likely due to the system deleting the base image.
  • If the device doesn’t have enough disk space to hold both the base image and the maintenance release image, it will delete the base image and the previously mentioned error message will be seen when attempting to install the maintenance release.

Resolution

If there is not enough disk space then most of the downloaded images will need to be deleted before continuing.

  1. Try to download the base image.
  2. If this is successful then install it and reboot the device.
  3. If the download of the base image also fails go to the CLI of the device and run the command below:
    > delete software version X  (press 'tab' to see all downloaded versions available for deletion)
  4.  After the device reboots it will be on the version of the base image. Go back into CLI and delete the previously installed image.
  5. Download and install the target maintenance release.

Example of a device on 7.1.20 going to 8.0.20:

  1. Download 8.0.0, install it and reboot once prompted to.
  2. If the download fails then go to the CLI and delete all other versions apart from 7.1.20 (even 7.1.0 if necessary):
    > delete software version 7.1.0 (press 'tab' to see all downloaded versions available for deletion)
  3. After the device reboots to 8.0.0 go to the CLI and delete 7.1.20:
    > delete software version 7.1.20
  4. Download 8.0.20, install it and reboot.
